Large, colorful carp streamers (koinobori) fly at Zojo-ji temple in Tokyo to celebrate Children's Day (Kodomo no hi) on May 5th. Traditionally, streamers were flown from homes to honor sons, the carp symbolizing energy, strength, courage and determination. In modern Japan, however, the carp streamers are flown for both sons and daughters.
