Cat City by artist Théophile Steinlen This image was created by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 –1923), a talented and versatile artist with a great fondess for cats. This artwork is a remarkable example. It shows a city of cats listening to the top cat, who is surrounded by the light of the full moon. Steinlen was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker who lived most of his life in Paris, France during the height of the Art Nouveau period. He is known throughout the world for his art posters and advertisements, engravings and paintings. He contributed 16 lithographs in 1895 to the Belle Epoque songs of Paul Delmet, and was a regular contributor to magazines and other publications, often working under a pseudonym in order to avaoid political criticism. He produced hundreds of illustrations and paintings throught his life. His work is widely collectible and can be seen today at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and at many other museums throughout the world.
