It is for this reason that cosmonauts and athletes from Russia during the Communist era wore these letters, in case you ever wondered. On this design we've given the full Russian name, which is pronounced Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik, from which the translation "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics", or "USSR", comes.
