It is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the first French Republic in 1792. Happy peasants dance the farandole, an open chain community dance, around three liberty trees.
About the artist:
Henri Julien Felix Rousseau (1844-1910) was a French Post Impressionist painter in the Naive genre, primitive manner or Primitivism. He was also known as Le Douanier, the customs officer.
