On May 23, 2021, I rescued this snapper from a grizzly death as roadkill. I came upon it at the intersection of M60/I94 and Michigan Avenue in Jackson, Michigan. I picked him up with both hands at the back of the carapace. I then, in a very undignified way, straddled him across the road and released him to the point you see pictured here. I figure it weighed 15-20 lbs. at least. Later, I went back and saw that I had done the right thing by placing it in the direction of travel. HIs track went north, away from the road. Turtles in Michigan are mating and nesting in May and June. If you place them on the wrong side of the road, they will cross it again, risking death to procreate!
