Cheonggye Stream Postcard
Cheonggyecheon, Seoul, South Korea The Cheonggye Stream is a tributary of the Han river. It was an important water source of the historic Seoul. After the Korean War many refugees lived around the stream and the surrounding area become a slum. The stream was covered with concrete roads in the 60s and an elevated highway was built on the top in 1968. The restoration of the stream was an impressive urban renewal project. The elevated highways and concrete roads were removed, the small valley of the stream was cleaned up and tons of clean water are pumped daily into the stream. Today it's a lively place in the city.
