The Cheyenne Brothers Starting on Their Fall Hunt 1861 1869 George Catlin The Cheyenne are a tribe of North American Plains Indians who spoke an Algonquian language. The Cheyenne were one of the most prominent of the Plains tribes. Today, 7,502 people reside on the Tongue River in Wyoming (Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation), and another 387 live on the Cheyenne and Arapaho reservation in Oklahoma. George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American Frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. Born: July 26, 1796, Wilkes-Barre, PA Died: December 23, 1872, Jersey City, NJ.
