"Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro" magnet

The Statue of Christ the Redeemer is one of Rio de Janeiro's most famous landmarks. It was inaugurated in 1931 on the top of Corcovado mountain, 710m above the sea level. The statue is 30m high, plus 8m of its base, and spans other 30m. It weighs over 1000 tons (the head weighs 30 tons and each arm 57 tons). The structure is made of concrete and covered with soapstone, a rock widely used in Brazil. From Corcovado, one has a wonderful 360° view of Rio de Janeiro. The mountain is surrounded by Tijuca Forest, part of Tijuca National Park and the world's largest forest in an urban area. In July 2007 the Statue of Christ the Redeemer was elected one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
