The 'hikiryo' crest, also known as 'futatsu biki', has its origins in the Genpei era. The military banners used in battle were made by sewing five pieces of fabric together, with the middle piece dyed black. This is referred to as 'nakaguro' or 'one hikiryo'. The 'two hikiryo' design features fabric layered in white, black, white, black, and white from top to bottom. However, there is no clear consensus on what the 'hikiryo' crest is actually designed to represent (according to 'Reading Family Crests' by Toshio Nosaka).
