Blue Water Lilies (Nymphéas bleus), 1916-1919 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. Painted in the late 1910s on a square canvas about two metres on each side, it is far larger than Monet's earlier water-lily pictures. Horizon and sky are banished, leaving only water, floating lilies and the reflections of willow branches. Blue and violet tones dominate this canvas, while patches of green and pale blossoms interrupt the surface. The absence of a conventional viewpoint makes the pond appear both deep and flat at once. These late paintings developed alongside Monet's vast decorative project, in which the garden became the basis for an immersive, almost continuous painted environment.
