Jerusalem Artichoke Flowers (Fleurs de topinambour), 1880 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. Monet sent this flower painting to the collector M. Cahuzac in November 1880. Cahuzac then lent it to the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 under its French title. The tall yellow flowers fill the vertical canvas, but Monet keeps the handling loose and energetic rather than botanical. The painting later belonged to Georges de Bellio, one of the earliest collectors of Impressionism. Its humble subject was not always recognized: for more than forty years in the twentieth century it was published as a vase of chrysanthemums. It entered a public collection in 1963 through the bequest of the American collector Chester Dale.
