Snow Scene at Argenteuil (Rue sous la neige, Argenteuil), 1875 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. The severe winter of 1874-1875 inspired Monet to paint eighteen snow scenes around Argenteuil. This view shows the Boulevard Saint-Denis near his home, with the railway station behind the painter, and it is the largest of the series. Whites, blues and grays are warmed by touches of pink as the overcast afternoon light fades. Thicker paint on the foreground road suggests deep snow, while the atmosphere is brushed in with lighter strokes, in a typically Impressionist study of weather and light.
