Monet spent about three weeks at Étretat in February 1883, repeatedly painting its cliffs despite cold weather and difficult rocky terrain. This sunset view features the dramatic rock formations known as the Elephant and the Needle. He built the hazy atmosphere from quick, individual strokes of bright color, while wet paint layered into the setting sun creates partial color mixtures on the canvas.
