The Tuileries, Study (Les Tuileries, esquisse), around 1876 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. This rapidly handled canvas belongs to Monet's group of Tuileries views made from an elevated apartment overlooking the garden. Its sketch-like surface concentrates on the overall arrangement of paths, trees and light rather than polished detail. Monet nevertheless considered it worth showing in public, and it hung at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. Gustave Caillebotte acquired the painting directly from Monet in May 1877. It later formed part of Caillebotte's celebrated bequest to the French State. The work therefore links Monet's Paris experiments with one of the most important early collections of Impressionist painting.
