Claude Monet - Woman with a Parasol facing left Dart Board

Study of a Figure Outdoors / Woman with a Parasol Facing Left, 1886 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. More than a decade after painting Camille with a parasol, Monet returned to the idea of a standing figure seen outdoors against sky and wind. For this Giverny study, Suzanne Hoschedé served as the model. Monet was less interested in individual portrait likeness than in integrating the figure with changing light and atmosphere. The face is largely concealed, while the pale dress, parasol and surrounding grasses are broken into quick color notes. A companion canvas shows the figure turned in the opposite direction, making the pair a deliberate study of pose and outdoor effect. Both canvases stayed in the Monet family until his son Michel gave them to the French state in 1927.
