Clipper Ship Young America 2 1853

The Young America, a clipper ship built in New York in 1853. It launched at the height of the clipper construction boom. The Young America sailed in the California trade, on transatlantic routes made voyages to Australia and the Far East. The Young America cost $140,000 to build. It set many speed records and sailed from New York to San Francisco 20 times, averaging 118 days per trip. Its reputation for strength and speed earned high freight rates. Its maiden voyage from New York to San Francisco earned $86,400. The Young America was known as an able, seaworthy and long lived ship. Between 1853 and 1880 it made numerous passages between New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong. It went missing in 1886 after it entered the Atlantic oil trade.
