The coelacanth is a lobe-finned fish (sarcopterygii) once thought to have gone extinct in the Late Cretaceous, only to be rediscovered by a scientist in 1938. Lobe-finned fish, like the modern coelacanths and lungfish, are the ancestors of the tetrapods (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals).
