Bishkek's Soviet relics have gone from despised pieces of architecture to much appreciated monuments of the past. Bishkek is quickly becoming a modern city, with towers and shopping centers sprouting up at breakneck pace. Although the Kyrgyz people have been independent since 1991, there is a certain affinity for the Soviet Union. The Bishkek Circus (built in 1976 when the city was called Frunze) is still in use today and is popular among tourists visiting Kyrgyzstan.
