Construction of the U.S. Capitol Dome Photo Print

Construction of the U.S. Capitol Dome Photo Print

The U.S. Capitol Buildings's great cast-iron dome is an astonishing feat of architecture and engineering. It was the Capitol's second dome, the earlier wooden one was removed as a precaution against fire. The replacement dome was planned by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the Capitol extension, whose design was influenced by classical European domes. Iron brackets embedded in five million pounds of brickwork laid on the old stone walls hold an outer ring of 36 columns (one every 10 degrees). Thirty-six curving iron trusses rise to the lantern and support both the inner dome and the outer skin. Work began in 1855 with the removal of the old wooden dome. In 1860, the New York foundry of Janes, Fowler, Kirtland & Company won the contract to finish the dome. At the outbreak of the Civil War the contractor was advised not to expect further payment but they decided to continue anyway. That decision inspired President Lincoln and others to see the dome as a sign that the nation would also continue. The last section of the Statue of Freedom was positioned on December 2, 1863, and the interior was finished in 1866. The dome's total cost was $1,047,291. http://www.flickr.com/photos/uscapitol/6851529731/in/pool-1058319@N21/

Ordered this as a surprise for my nephew’s first birthday. It came out beautiful! So many joyful tears were she’d when it was unwrapped. Why then did I give this 4 stars? I made three attempts to order this through the app on my iPhone. First time, got all the pics loaded, clicked to resize it and lost everything. I tried again, this time, when I clicked on the “add to cart” button, the button froze and I couldn’t buy it. I nearly gave up. Three days later, I tried one more time and it went through that time. On a positive note, the collage came in record time, arriving the day before the party, though it was scheduled to arrive afterward. Overall, excellent product. High quality, well worth the $$$. Gorgeous!!! Paper quality is superb! Colors are vibrant! Everything is aligned beautifully. Only flaw, the picture had a 2 in scratch directly through the main photo. It’s an obvious scratch, one I was initially very bothered by. The sender had to have seen it and yet, still mailed it as it. I would have asked for a new one had I not needed to gift it the very next day. Otherwise, it’s stunning. I would definitely purchase again.

This is one super nice item! It is a great work of art for my wall. It would make a great framed gift too! The weight of the paper used, being Kodak paper, is spot on perfect! The printing of this fine work of art photo is top notch gallery worthy all the way!

Beautiful! High quality, semi-gloss, nice weight paper. Wonderful Bible verse and just such a lovely watercolor! BE AWARE: White border around the artwork included in size. My 8.5x11" print has a 1/2" white border. The actual artwork is 7.5x10 inches I had not understood this before; however, it was just as pictured on Zazzle. I had planned on matting, so this will workout perfectly when done! :). High quality, nice weight paper, clear print, good color
