Dan Youra's artwork has been described as "satiric" and "acerbic." You see why, when you view Youra's collection of COVID cards. The artist acknowledges that they are "sick," even "macabre." Youra is quoted as saying, "You can't whitewash this hellish disease." Youra’s sarestire, expsed thru his cartoons and caricatures, exposes the insanity of the disease. Satire is defined as "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues." Youra’s Sick Cards probe the suffering and death delivered by the sickening virus. Satire by definition is not pretty. It exposes the dark side of human life. Youra's art isn't aimed at the virus, rather at the human response to the virus –– masks, ICU, quarantine, VAXX or NO VAXX, this drug or that drug, death or no death. In an additional twist of irony, Youra's cartoony viruses are portrayed as cute and non threatening. Youra claims, “We have become the virus and the virus is us.” Whether your response to the cutesy viruses and sick satire is a groan or a chuckle, you might see a glint of truth in the satire of an artist, who can boss around an army of cartoon characters.
