This postcard features Cunningham Pier in Victoria, Australia. It is one of the most iconic structures along the waterfront. It opened in the 1850's and was a vital part of the port and rail system to load and unload cargo until the late 1970's. As Geelong's ports were modernized, Cunningham Pier was no longer suitable and fell into discontinuance. However, in 1989, a few local entrepreneurs viewed the green cargo shed as having some potential for social events. They started what became an institution for Geelong's social calendar. This huge social event turned the goods shed into a huge nightclub with thousands of visitors seeing in the New Year at that location! New Year on the Pier became an annual event until the property was sold off in the 1990's which forced a slight name change to the event and it became known as New Year by the Pier after that.
