Cute Baby Groundhog Marmotte Marmot Canada Postcard

A shy cute baby groundhog peeks out from beneath some green leaves. This baby was born in spring in a rambling park by the riverside, and is just learning to venture out of her family burrow to find food. She was munching some wild strawberries when I startled her, and ran away but not far. Groundhogs or woodchucks have an innate curiosity, and she's probably not had any bad human experiences. These animals are unwelcome around rural settlements because of their vast number of holes leading to tunnels and living quarters underground. Horses and cattle can step in the holes and break legs, so farmers often shoot the groundhogs. Those woodchucks who grow up in an urban green space, however, are generally safe - might get chased by a dog or person, but they're never very far from a hole and can make a quick getaway. Groundhogs move with great agility for such a rotund mammal. They love root vegetables such as carrots and will be friendly once they trust you, and even eat out of your hand.
