Chickadees are active, lively birds known for their cheery-sounding chick-a-dee call. They feed primarily on insects and seeds, and is known for its ability to cache food in order to survive long, cold winters. A chickadee's hippocampus expands by about 30 percent during the fall and retains its volume during the winter allowing the bird to remember where it has stashed food.
