Rare hand colored lithographic plates by Hieronymus Hess after Matthew Merian's 17th century drawings of the frescoes on the cemetery walls of the church of St. John at Basel which were originally painted in 1312.
First published in 1840, the prints are an Unusual and gripping variation on the 'Dance of Death' theme, which increased in popularity after the "Black Plague" of the 14th century.
