Dead Poet Being Carried by a Centaur (Sunset) Ceramic Tile

Dead Poet Being Carried by a Centaur (Sunset) Ceramic Tile

This design features a painting by the French artist Gustave Moreau (1826–1898), who was an important figure in the Symbolist movement. It shows a young poet who has recently died being carried in the arms of a centaur. The scene incorporates elements from ancient Greek mythology, as well as Gustave Moreau's own creative interpretation. The centaur, which is a creature from Greek mythology with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse, holds the lifeless poet in his arms. The image can be seen as encapsulating the idea of artistic suffering and the poet as a martyr or visionary figure. Moreau often employed mythological tropes and allegorical themes in order to explore philosophical and spiritual ideas. Some critics have said that the figure of the dead poet, with his lifeless body and closed eyes, suggests a sense of poetic inspiration being carried away or lost in the realm of the imagination. There is a beautiful red sunset in the background. The original artwork was painted circa 1890, and there is great dignity and beauty in the image. Gustave Moreau produced this work soon after the death of his friend and companion Alexandrine Dureux. The painting is now on display in the Musée Gustave Moreau, in Paris.
