Its inspiration came from a cartoon drawn by Thomas Nast (political cartoonist) in 1874 where the donkey (the democratic party) in a lion's skin was scaring the elephant labeled "the republican vote". From then on, it became the symbol of the democratic party. The donkey has evolved from a comical cartoon to a symbol of strong will and hard work.
