The Racecourse - Amateur Jockeys near a Carriage / At the Races, painted between 1876 and 1887 in oil on canvas by French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas. Amateur jockeys gather beside a carriage at the racecourse, with horses, riders and spectators arranged as fragments of a larger modern sporting scene. Degas uses abrupt cropping and uneven spacing to avoid the formal order of traditional equestrian painting, making the composition feel momentary even though it was revised for years. The picture had been commissioned in 1874 by the singer and collector Jean-Baptiste Faure but was not delivered until 1887. That long interval shows how a subject that looks casually observed could remain under sustained reconsideration in Degas's studio.
