This postcard features the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama. It was built in 1940 and named after a former Confederate brigadier general and U.S. senator, Edmund Winston Pettus. It was the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday (March 7, 1965) was the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965) when armed police clashed with Civil Rights Movement demonstrators, brutally beating them with billy clubs and attacking them with horses and tear gas as the demonstrators tried to march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol, Montgomery.
