Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia Italy Postcard

This postcard features a portrait of Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia (in English, also known as Helen Cornaro) from Italy. Born on June 5, 1646, she was the illegitimate child of Gianbattista Cornaro-Piscopia and his mistress Zanetta Boni. She was a child prodigy and in 1678, she became the first woman to receive an academic degree from a university and the first to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree which was conferred on 25 June 1678 in Padua Cathedral. According to Wikipedia, "The last seven years of her life were devoted to study and charity. She died in Padua in 1684 of tuberculosis and was buried in the church of Santa Giustina."
