“The Elliots were one of the most active, most powerful and most notorious of the Scottish Border clans,” the clan’s website says. The ancient family home, Hermitage Castle, near Liddesdale, is located in a lonely spot and said to be one of the most sinister-looking castles ever built. The castle has inspired local legends of the wicked Lord Soulis, a magician who sold his soul to the devil, and of a giant with impregnable armour. The ruins are open to the public at varying times from April through November.
