After leaving the workshop of Filippo Lippi, Botticelli began his career with this painting. There are multiple problems with this image. The composition is organized into 3 areas where there is no clear balance. There are also multiple characters with little relationship between them. Despite this "negative" start to define Botticelli we should emphasize the treatment of line and color on Mary. This special care was repeated in later Madonnas.
