Hodge Open Air School, Cleveland, Ohio, between 1900 and 1920. The open air school concept was created to treat children with pre-tuberculosis symptoms. In this photo, the children are either in bed, wearing leg braces, or using crutches. Some of the characteristics of the schools included large windows, easy access to the outdoors remote from cites, closely monitored diet, physical exercise and regular medical attention.
