Located along the Grand River approximately 30 miles east of Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids is the economic and cultural hub of West Michigan. Grand Rapids is nicknamed "Furniture City", because it is known as a historic furniture-manufacturing center. Other nicknames given to Grand Rapids include "River City" and "Beer City". The motto of Grand Rapids is "Motu Viget", which means "Strength in Activity" in Latin. An inhabitant of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is known as a Grand Rapidian.
