About This Design

Fort Laramie, Sublette Fort, Fort William, Miller

Fort Laramie, Sublette Fort, Fort William, Miller

Fort Laramie (or Sublette's Fort or Fort William) (1837) by AJ Miller is a vintage fine art American West landscape painting. Native American Indians with their tribal teepees and cavalry officers, cowboys and frontiersmen. Tribes with tepees surround the fort. Fort Laramie was a significant 19th century trading post and diplomatic site located in Wyoming. During the mid 19th century, it was a primary stopping point on the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail and was, along with Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River, the most significant economic hub of commerce in the region. The fort was constructed in the 1830s during the fur trade. One of the principal trappers was William Sublette, and the fort was therefore called Fort William for a period of time. The fort's location along the lower Laramie River near its mouth on the North Platte River made it a convenient stop for travelers on the overland emigrant trails following the North Platte River west from Nebraska. About the artist: Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874) was an American painter best known for his Wild West paintings from the northwestern United States.
