Four Shapes Stacked: Shapenote Lesson ~ Chester T-Shirt

The shape-note method of singing from written music first appeared in a book called "The Easy Instructor," printed in 1801. It used four syllables for the seven notes of the scale and gave each syllable a distinctive note head: a triangle for fa, an oval for sol, a rectangle for la, and a diamond for [mi]. - Smithsonian in Your Classroom, October 2000 "Chester" by Billings/Doddridge is on the back, along with major and minor scales. You will find "mi" substituted for "me" in many publications, including my own earlier graphics. "Mi" is a note in the seven-shape scale which does not correspond to the four-shape "me." I think most would agree that this is a minor distinction, but I've been going through my own graphics to correct the discrepancy. The scale of C Major is on the back of this T-shirt.
