Charles Messier was a French astronomer who was the first person to catalog galaxies, nebulae and star clusters in a systematic way. In his search for comets, of which he discovered 13, Messier cataloged the blurry objects he observed in the night sky so that he would know that he didn't need to spend time studying them. These became known as Messier Objects and are today still designated with the letter M.
