Newark Castle, in Newark-on-Trent in the English county of Nottinghamshire. Founded in the mid 12th century by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. During the English Civil War between the Royalists supporting King Charles 1st and the Parliamentarians or Roundheads led by Oliver Cromwell Newark assumed geographical importance. It was on two of the major roads in England. Parliamentarians were keen to take it out of Royalist hands and assume control of the River Trent seen in this picture.
