The Grand Army of the Republic was formed by the Union Veterans of the Civil War (Army, Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service) in order for them maintain communications with each other and to give a political voice to the veterans. It was formed on April 6, 1866 on the principles of "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty." Thus 2016 is the 150th Anniversary (i.e., sesquicentennial) of the formation of the GAR.
