Lindau (Lake Constance) is a large district town and the administrative seat of the district of the same name in the Bavarian district of Schwaben. The city, until 1803 free Reichsstadt, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Constance in the three-country corner of Germany-Austria-Switzerland; its historical center is the historic center, which is collectively listed as a historical monument, with the magnificent 15th century Town Hall on the Maximilianstraße. Lindau was the site of a Reichstag in 1496. The historic old town is located in the island district, which covers an area of 0.68 km² and has a population of about 2800. The population of the island was already much higher, for example, the population of the 1900 census was estimated at 5853. The island was formerly made up of three sub-islands (Hintere Island, main island and castle/Roman hill). The island is connected to the mainland by a railway dam and a road bridge. Lindau is also home to the small island of Hoy, which was built in the 1920s as an artificial seaside resort. There is also a block of gneiss in the shallow water, about 40 meters away from the so-called "Hinteren Island" (part west of the railway dam; also called "Western Island"), called Hexenstein.
