Ġgantija Temples Malta Postcard

The Ġgantija Temples are a megalithic temple complex from the Neolithic era, located on the Mediterranean island of Gozo in Malta. Dating back to around 3600–3200 BC, these monumental structures are among the oldest free-standing stone buildings in the world, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Built from massive coralline limestone blocks, the temples are a testament to the remarkable engineering skills of a prehistoric civilization that thrived long before the bronze age. According to local folklore, the massive structures were built by a race of giants, which gave the site its name, 'Ġgantija'—meaning 'giantess' in Maltese. The complex consists of two distinct temples enclosed by a boundary wall, featuring prominent apses that were likely used for ritualistic purposes, animal sacrifices, and libations. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a breathtaking monument of human prehistory, offering panoramic views of the Gozitan countryside.
