It is the vintage motif that appeared alongside the British Union Jack on the flag of the Gold Coast British Ghana, 1877-1957, prior to UK independence in 1957. The same design featured on the flags of the former British Colonies of Gambia, Lagos, Sierra Leone and the West Africa Settlements.
