History buffs will know EXACTLY what this is. The Grand Army of the Republic or GAR was the precursor to the VFW of today. All Union veterans of the Civil War could be members in the GAR. They staged events, raised money for causes, built buildings, libraries and had regular "encampments" or reunions. It was voted on, by members, that the GAR would cease to exist when the last UNION Civil War veteran died. When Albert Woolson died in 1956, the GAR was disbanded.
