Great-Billed Parrot, Tanygnathus Megalorynchos Large Clock
This vintage natural history illustration features the Great-billed Parrot (Tanygnathus megalorynchos), traditionally titled in French as "Le Perroquet à bec couleur de sang" (The Blood-colored Beak Parrot). The artwork is a masterpiece by the renowned French zoological artist Jacques Barraband, created for François Levaillant’s seminal 19th-century work, Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets. The plate showcases the bird in a classic profile view, perched upon a textured, weathered branch, highlighting the meticulous detail and scientific accuracy characteristic of the era's ornithological studies.
The most striking feature of the Tanygnathus megalorynchos is its exceptionally large, bright red beak, which gives the species its name. In this illustration, the parrot displays a vibrant palette of forest green plumage across its head and underparts. Its wings are a complex tapestry of colors, featuring deep cobalt blue primary feathers and unique yellow-edged wing coverts that create a scalloped, golden appearance. The long, tapered tail is rendered in various shades of olive and turquoise, capturing the iridescent quality of the parrot's feathers under natural light.
Native to the tropical forests and coastal mangroves of Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia and the Philippines, the Great-billed Parrot is a symbol of biodiversity in the Wallacea region. These birds are known for their shy demeanor and nocturnal tendencies compared to other parrot species. Historically, Barraband’s illustrations played a vital role in documenting these exotic species for European audiences. Today, this image remains a sought-after piece of botanical art, blending historical scientific inquiry with the timeless aesthetic of fine art engraving.

Great price for a very nice product. Arrived a day early - unheard of these days. The outside gold area has a little more orange tone to it than shown in the picture. Great packing so product can't get damaged. I used the same packing to forward the clock to my brother and sister-on-law for the 50th wedding anniversary. Printing was just as expected - lovely!

My 93- yr. old Dad has everything.....and now including a clock with pictures of him in action!
Was initially a bit difficult to size & position the pictures in each space, but the end product was worth the effort. He enjoyed it and it was definitely a unique way of memorializing good times in his life. Quality of print was good.
