Great Mosque of Djenné Mali Postcard

The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud-brick building in the world and is considered by many architects to be the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. Located on the flood plain of the Bani River, the mosque's walls are reconstructed with sun-dried earth bricks and coated with plaster, giving it a monumental and organic appearance. Its most striking features are the 'toron'—wooden beams that project from the walls to serve as permanent scaffolding for the annual replastering festival.
