Greater Vasa Parrot, Coracopsis Vasa Illustration Large Clock
The Greater Vasa Parrot (Coracopsis vasa) is one of the most enigmatic and evolutionarily distinct bird species in the world. Native to the diverse ecosystems of Madagascar and the Comoros, this parrot defies the vibrant stereotypes of the Psittaciformes order. This high-quality illustration captures the bird’s unique "prehistoric" aesthetic, making it an essential reference for avian art and wildlife education.
Unlike the colorful Macaws of the Amazon, the Greater Vasa Parrot is defined by its sooty-black and slate-gray plumage. The illustration highlights the bird’s elongated neck and small head, which give it a silhouette more akin to a hawk or a pigeon than a typical parrot. Its heavy, horn-colored beak stands out against the dark feathers, while its long, rounded tail provides a sense of balanced elegance.
The Greater Vasa is famous for its unusual breeding biology. It is one of the few parrot species where the female is the dominant. During the nesting season, females often lose their head feathers to reveal bright orange or yellow skin, a striking visual cue for mate attraction. They are also among the most intelligent birds on the planet, known for using tools to process nutrients—specifically grinding seashells for calcium.
Thriving in Madagascar's dry deciduous forests and humid woodlands, the Greater Vasa Parrot plays a vital role in its ecosystem as a seed disperser. This illustration serves as a tribute to a species that represents millions of years of isolated evolution, offering a window into the biodiversity of the Indian Ocean islands.

Great price for a very nice product. Arrived a day early - unheard of these days. The outside gold area has a little more orange tone to it than shown in the picture. Great packing so product can't get damaged. I used the same packing to forward the clock to my brother and sister-on-law for the 50th wedding anniversary. Printing was just as expected - lovely!

My 93- yr. old Dad has everything.....and now including a clock with pictures of him in action!
Was initially a bit difficult to size & position the pictures in each space, but the end product was worth the effort. He enjoyed it and it was definitely a unique way of memorializing good times in his life. Quality of print was good.
