    The illustration depicts a traditional Greek village, characterized by white houses with red roofs located on a hillside overlooking the sea. This architectural style is common in the Greek islands. Traditional Greek houses were usually built of mud bricks and wood, and often needed to be repaired. The houses were usually built around an inner courtyard or garden. The windows were usually small and without glass, but with wooden shutters to protect from the sun. The houses in the illustrations are similar to those found in Crete and other islands in Greece.
