The district was built to accommodate the needs of travelers and visitors to the shrine. It eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan. The main street of Gion is Hanamikoji Street. Hanamikoji Street has a unique atmosphere and is lined with buildings decorated in red colored trim, and bamboo preserving the wall under eaves. There are teashops and long established restaurants, and shops selling sweets.
