Reproduction of 1877 campaign ribbon for the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. He was the reform candidate elected to undo the corruption from the Grant administration. His election was contested - he lost the popular vote but manipulated ballots in South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida to take the electoral college and the office. Hayes ended Reconstruction in the south; used troops against strikers in the railroad strikes of the time; and refused to serve a second term, devoting himself to prison reform and programs for black southern youth.
