The lion was one of the first heraldic symbols, dating back to the high medieval era, around the 12th century, at least. It is part of the coat of arms of many countries, cities and regions (past and present) including but not limited to England,Scotland, Austria, Bohemia, Norway, Jerusalem, Leon (in old Spain, before it was Spain!), Finland and more. It is more common than other heraldic symbols because its meaning is larger, extending beyond heraldry to include heritage and chivalry.
