A beautiful female golden-tailed sapphire hummingbird in flight against a blue-gray sky. This hummingbird species is native to South America. Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds - the tiniest bird is the Bee Hummingbird. They have the fastest metabolic rate of any animal, except insects. A hummingbird can beat its wings on average 50 times a second, and can reach 200 wing beats per second. When flying it can reach a speed of more than 54 km/h (34 mph). Hummingbirds can even fly upside down. They dine on insects and spiders but are especially fond of flower nectar, preferring plants whose nectar has the highest sugar content (10% and more). A hummingbird eats twice its weight in nectar per day. Spiritually, hummingbirds signify good luck, happiness, protection and achievement. This small bird can represent focus, attention to detail, mental acuity and freedom of movement in multiple directions. Although tiny, the hummingbird is a true warrior spirit.
